The Different Beginnings of Jesus in the Gospels: Luke’s Account


In the sixth month God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth of Galilee to Mary an unmarried young woman engaged to Joseph, of the house of David. (1:26-27)

Luke begins by letting readers know that this event took place “in the sixth month,” which is the month of Elul (August/September) on the Jewish calendar. If this is correct, then Jesus could not have been born in December, as Christians have been taught for the past 1,700 years.
