From Our Learning About Your Biblical Heritages Series
When
preachers of my childhood church read the account from Acts 2:14-39, it sounded
like Peter was holding an old fashion tent revival like our church held every
summer:
Then Peter said: “Repent and be baptized in the name of Yeshua
the Anointed One for the remission of sins. You will then receive the gift of
the Holy Spirit.”
Peter’s altar call was a huge success – 3,000 people believed and were baptized. We understood that to mean
that 3,000 people became Christians -- and
most of them were Jewish. Now they
would go to Heaven instead of burn in Hell for eternity!
For some reason our preachers usually stopped reading the biblical text
at that verse. But if you have been studying with us for a while you know what
we always say -- keep on reading and keep
things in context. Pay close attention to what those 3,000 new converts did
after they were baptized (Acts 2:41-45):
1. They ate together daily
with the apostles and other believers.
2. They were taught daily by the
apostles.
3. They prayed together daily.
4. They gathered in
the Temple daily.
5. They sold their possessions, goods, and land.
6. They brought the money they received from
selling those things and laid it at the apostles’ feet.
Is that what you
did after you were saved and baptized? If your church had told you the above things
were requirements “for being saved,” would you have become a Christian? I think
requirements #5 and #6 would lower the conversion statistics in all churches
dramatically.
This raises a
lot of important questions for people who identify themselves as “Christian”
today – and they are very important
questions. Today, the word “Christian”
is an “umbrella identity” that can
mean many different things to believers and non-believers. The requirement for membership
in Yeshua’s movement was very specific – one
must do actions of righteousness in order to enter eternal life. It had
nothing to do with believing anything about Yeshua.
One thing we
need to clearly understand is that the account from Acts is an important part
of our Christian heritage and history. Yeshua’s teachings have been replaced by
“institutional truths” created by
church leaders and others over the past 1,800 years. Today, Christian
membership and salvation messages rest on one thing -- “believing in Jesus.” What they mean by that is “believing what they say about him.”
As we have said
many times, one fact is very clear – his name
wasn’t Jesus, it was Yeshua. If a church doesn’t call him by the right
name, you may be sure that the rest of what they say about him should be
double-checked before you believe it! We
recommend comparing what anyone says about Jesus and being a Christian to what
Yeshua said about himself and belonging to his movement.
We created the Biblical Heritage Center and the Real Yeshua Project to help anyone that’s
interested learn about the real Yeshua
and his teachings, plus discover how Christian belief systems and institutions have
evolved and changed since Yeshua lived and taught in the first century.

● This probably upset
a number of readers.
So, do you think we should keep on sharing info like this?
● Please share this with others too –
● In America “freedom of religion” and “freedom of speech”
include “the freedom to talk about and do what Yeshua
taught” too!
and tell your friends
and church members about it and ask them to “Like “ it too!
